No entanto, essa articulação enfrenta alguns desafios. O ex-presidente Bolsonaro declarou recentemente que seus favoritos para uma possível eleição presidencial contra Lula são o governador de São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, e seu filho, o deputado federal Eduardo Bolsonaro. Isso pode complicar as ambições de Zema em obter o respaldo de Bolsonaro.
Adicionalmente, o PSD, partido do atual prefeito de Belo Horizonte, Fuad Noman, que também está na corrida para a reeleição e é adversário de Engler, faz parte da base de apoio de Zema na Assembleia Legislativa de Minas Gerais, com dez parlamentares. Esses parlamentares têm pressionado o governador a manter uma postura neutra na disputa municipal para não prejudicar a aliança na Assembleia.
No primeiro turno da eleição municipal, Zema apoiou o deputado estadual Mauro Tramonte, do partido Republicanos, e indicou sua ex-secretária de Planejamento, Luísa Barreto, como candidata a vice na chapa. Tramonte começou a campanha na liderança, mas terminou em terceiro lugar. Essa experiência pode influenciar a estratégia de Zema no segundo turno e nas futuras negociações políticas.
